DIY Distressed Cabinets vs. Letting The Experts Install Brand New

The new trend in homes these days is distressed wood, whether it is distressed hardwood flooring, distressed furniture, or distressed cabinets. Taking your current cabinets and transforming them into that “old world,” instead of installing brand new cabinets, look can add a nice antique touch to your kitchen and save you money.

Turning your current cabinets into distressed cabinets is a fairly easy process and requires not a lot of tools and supplies. You can apply this distressed look to your already installed kitchen cabinets. Simply begin by cleaning your cabinets with a household ammonia-based cleaner to get all that existing grease that has built up over the years, off. Next, you will want to mask off an areas that you do not want to paint, as well as the surrounding walls of the cabinets. Once you have finished masking, you will then want to begin sanding the existing cabinets in order to create a rough surface. Following the sanding, you will want to apply your latex primer to the cabinets and allow it dry completely. After the primer has had time to dry completely, you will then brush the cabinets with the base color you have chosen and then wait for that to dry completely.

Once the above steps have been completed it is now time to start the fun part and get that distressed cabinet look you want. Sand the surface of the cabinets in random spots in order to get that distressed look and in some areas sand down all the way to the primer for an even more distressed look. If you want an even more distressed finish you can go as far as taking a sandwich bag and fill with a couple of small bolts or a chain and lightly hit it, adding a little more character to the cabinets.

If you are looking to get that custom look in your kitchen without going through the trouble of installing new cabinets and spending a fortune, then distressing your kitchen cabinets yourself is the way to go.
